Heat pumps under scrutiny

Top tradesman, Jeff Howell, has put air source heat pumps under the spotlight in his Telegraph column.

Air source heat pumps... a load of hot air?

Air source heat pumps use mains electricity to achieve a desired heat. They are said to deliver three units of heat energy for every unit of electricity used - giving 300% efficiency - but Jeff is yet to be convinced.

He calculates that if standard-rate mains electricity costs 12p per unit, 300% efficiency means heat pumps deliver heat at 4p per unit. However, gas costs 3.5p per unit, and off-peak economy 7 electricity costs 3.7p per unit, making heat pumps a more expensive option.

The building expert pointed out that while heat pumps are becoming popular with the environmental movement, they would also prove a costly alternative to LPG.

Taking the installation cost into consideration, replacing an existing LPG boiler with ASHP would have a 'payback-period' of more than 50 years.
