Most rural properties will rely on electricity for power, but it's versatility means it can also be used for central heating, water heaters, fires and cookers.
The average cost of an electric storage heating system is £3,000*.
Running costs tend to be more expensive, typically around £950 per annum.*
Electricity generation in the UK produces a high level of carbon dioxide, therefore domestic appliances are penalised in the Government’s heating system assessments.
According to Government figures, heating your home with electric storage heaters gives off more carbon dioxide than any other off mains gas fuel.**
‘Green’ electricity products are available from some energy suppliers.
Electricity does not need to be stored; so the property owner doesn’t need to find additional space.
Off-peak electricity tariffs are available.
There are a lot of products to choose from – especially cookers and fires.
Electric products do not emit any waste gases – so a flue isn’t required. It is the only rural fuel which doesn’t require a flue.
Some electric products – most notably storage heaters – are inflexible and uncontrollable.
A power cut or failure could mean a property loses its heating, hot water and cooking facilities – as well as its lighting and power. A back-up is usually required.
