Self build

Over 20,000 people take on self-build projects each year*, with a large proportion being in rural or isolated areas. Self builders are continually coming under pressure to build energy efficient homes – with the aim of reducing energy costs and the amount of carbon they are emitting, thus combating climate change.

Around 27 per cent of UK carbon emissions come from heating, lighting and powering our homes**, with the average household producing six tonnes of CO2 every year – enough to fill six hot air balloons***.

The UK Government has a target to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 12.5 per cent by 2012 and by 60 per cent by 2050 compared to 1990 levels****. To this end, legislation relating to house building is continually being tightened.

There are a few simple steps that every household can take to lower its carbon footprint, from basic measures – such as choosing energy efficient light bulbs and turning appliances off standby – to bigger changes that will not only have a significant impact on carbon emissions but cut fuel bills in the process.

For developers and self builders, there are a number of options available for off mains gas projects. This guide aims to cut through the jargon and help you change the way you use energy for good – reducing emissions and making a real difference to your home’s efficiency. We would like to help you understand what legislation you need to be aware of, and what heating options are available to you when building in rural off mains gas areas.
